According to UNESCO, Italy is home to two thirds of the world’s historical artistic heritage and today, Italian culture continues to play an important role in the fields of fashion, fine arts, contemporary design, architecture, cinema and music. Studying Italian at HKU will be an asset to students who are interested in a career in these fields, providing them not just with the necessary language skills, but also an in depth cultural and social understanding of the country and its people. Italy is the World’s 8th largest economy (by gross domestic product ranking). According to the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade there are approximately 300 Italian companies with Regional Headquarters, branch or representative offices in Hong Kong & Macau and about 1,500 in Mainland China.
The Italian government has also contributed to the development of Italian studies at The University of Hong Kong by providing a full-time teacher since 1998. Locally, the Italian section cooperates closely with the cultural service of the Italian Consulate General jointly organizing cultural and social events.
An agreement was signed in 2000 between the Italian Business Association of Hong Kong, the Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Hong Kong and the the Language Centre of the University of Hong Kong to provide the students of Italian at The University of Hong Kong with an opportunity of working in Italian companies which are members of the Chamber of Commerce. To improve their knowledge and use of spoken and written Italian, this internship programme is offered only during the summer.
